Danube closed due to barges hampering traffic

Tue Aug 21 19:05:48 CEST 2012 Timsen

On Aug 18, 2012, at 7.45 p.m. the "Deggendorf" suffered engine damage on the Danube close to the Isar and had to be stopped by emergency anchoring after one of the two machines failed immediately before reaching the port of Deggendorf. The two barges connected to the "Deggendorf" were losened and anchored close to the old ferry pt. Isarmünd. The Danube had to be closed for ship traffic as they hampered the passage of ships, while the "Deggendorf" was able to enter the port of Deggendorf with very slow speed. It was hoped to get the engine repaired soon and reconnect to the two barges on Aug 19, but the repair took much longer than expected. On Aug 21 the barges were carried away by other craft so that the river could be reopened for ship traffic in the run of the day.
