Salamis heading to Syracuse

Thu Aug 08 10:40:23 CEST 2013 Timsen

The "Salamis" was on its way to Syracuse after the Italian authorities have accepted the immigrants. This was made possible following intense diplomatic discussions between the Governments of Malta, Italy and Greece. In a statement earlier on Aug 7 by the Ministry for Home Affairs and National Secturity on the current situation of the "Salamis", it was said that the Maltese authorities were informed that the "Salamis" has made small movements towards Maltese territorial waters. Similar movements were considered normal outside non-territorial waters. The authorities had made it clear to the captain of the "Salamis" that the ship did not have permission to enter Maltese territory though the European Commissioner Cecilia Malmström had urged the Maltese authorities to take action because it was the humanitarian duty of the Maltese authorities to allow these persons to disembark. Sending the ship back to Libya would have been contrary to international law. The master of the ship had dispatched an urgent medical request as the injured woman needed immediate hospitalisation.
