Residents not happy with new asylum ship

Wed Mar 05 11:31:23 CET 2025 Timsen

The 'Danubia', actually used as an asylum ship, has docked in Krimpen upon the IJssel, but the residents found that the ship, which was recently used by the fire brigade for a major exercise, was particularly dirty. Since 2022, refugees have been accommodated in the Sliksloothaven on the asylum ship 'Allemania'. The vessel was supposed to remain there until the end of 2026, but was due for major maintenance, and on Feb 28, 2025, the successor 'Danubia', qhich is eqipped with 77 cabins, docked in Krimpen. It has not been used for two years, and there were complaints that dirt and rust were everywhere. According to the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), the ship was used in Utrecht to accommodate Ukrainians. However, as far as the municipality of Utrecht was concerned, this was only an emergency measure, as the ship was not only very expensive, but also impractical, being the only reception location where refugees cannot cook for themselves, while self-reliance is important’, the board wrote earlier in a letter to the council. It was investigated whether the ship could fulfil another function in Utrecht, but this was not found. However, the Utrecht fire brigade did use the ship for a major exercise last month. The COA was working to make the ship beautiful again. The intention is for the 'Danubia' to remain in Krimpen, the 'Allemania' will not return.

Fire brigade called due to strange smell

Tue Feb 27 10:08:54 CET 2024 Timsen

The fire brigade and police investigated the 'Danubia' after reports of strange smell at its berth at the Keulse Quay in Utrecht on Feb 27, 2024 at 1.24 a.m. Several investigations were carried out on the ship, where refugees from Ukraine were living. During the inspection by the fire brigade, a cleaning agent called Ozone in the ship's galley turned out to be the culprit. The enclosed space was ventilated on the advice of the hazardous substances advisor. The ship was not evacuated.
