Crew member died in boat crash in German Bight
One 57 year old crewman died, two others aged 36 and 38 were severly injured, when a work boat of the "MTM Westport" crashed 11 meters down into the sea in the foremidday of Nov 21, 2014, 10 miles SE of Heligoland. The ship was underway from Rotterdam to Hamburg in ballast and had dropped anchor at the time when the MRCC was notified about the accident. Several units, among them the lifeboat "Hermann Marwede" of the DGzRS Station Helgoland and the "Hermann Helms" of the station Cuxhaven were dispatched to the position of the chemical tanker. An SAR helicopter of the German Navy recovered one man from the sea. The crew transfer boat "SC Falcon“ took aboard one of the injured from the damaged boat of the "MTM Westport" and transferred him aboard the "Hermann Marwede". Another man who was injured was also taken aboard the "SC Falcon" before being hoisted by the helicopter who had transferred a medical from the "Ceona Amazon" onto the "Hermann Marwede" in the meantime. All attempts to resuscitate the man were in vain. The two injured men were taken to a hospital on the mainland aboard the SAR-helicopter. The crew of the police boat "Bürgermeister Brauer" started an investigation.
