Patrol boat transferred 12 rescued migrants from sinking yacht to shore, one died

Tue Jun 18 10:11:06 CEST 2024 Timsen

On the night of June 16, 2024, a sailboat caught fire and sank in the Ionian Sea, 125 nautical miles east of the Calabria region. The yacht may have been taking on water for three or four days before. Some passing vessels did not stop to help, 12 castaways, including a pregnant woman and two children were first transshipped by a French unit onto a merchant ship, were transferred aboard the 'CP 305' and taken to the port of Grazie in Roccella. A woman, who was thought to have fallen into the water, died immediately after landing. Survivors reported that 66 people were missing, including 26 children, some of them very young. Migrants involved in the shipwreck off Calabria came from Iran, Iraq and Syria, and entire families from Afghanistan were presumed dead. The Coast Guard has been engaged in the search for any missing persons, following the shipwreck of the boat with migrants on board, which presumably had left Turkey. The response was started following a mayday call launched by a French pleasure craft, sailing approximately 120 nautical from the Italian coast, on the edge of the SAR areas of competence of Greece and Italy which, after reporting the presence of the half-sunken boat, recovered 12 migrants. The MRCC of the Rome Coast Guard immediately diverted two merchant ships, which were sailing nearby, to the scene as well as an ATR42 aircraft of the Coast Guard and the 'CP 305' and 'CP 326', stationed in Calabria. Frontex assets also intervened on site. Six bodies were later found off Calabria by the Italian Coast Guard.
