Crew of Coxswain fully acquitted more than seven years after collision

Tue Jun 24 10:11:13 CEST 2025 Timsen

The court in The Hague has fully acquitted the crew of the 'Coxswain', the couple Jeremie and Natacha Bourdon from Douai, France, of guilt for the collision with the tanker 'Somtrans' on May 26, 2018. on the Dordtsche Kil. The ship had sunk and was later declared a constructive total loss. The Bourdon couple was rescued. The court in Rotterdam had previously ruled that the 'Coxswain' was 20% partly to blame, which meant that they would not get paid all their damages and might even have to pay extra. The court had initially ruled that they had taken action too late to prevent the collision. However, the court of appeal has now come to a different conclusion. The skipper of the 'Somtrans' was fined 2500 Euros because he had initially seen the barge, but had not kept it sufficiently in sight.

On Aug 19, 2020, the Rotterdam court found the skipper Jaromir D. The court sentenced him with a fine of 2500 euros, but saw no reason for a professional ban.

Mon May 28 20:45:31 CEST 2018 Timsen

The heavily damaged wreck of the "Coxswain" was raised by the sheerleg "Matador 2" on May 28 at 4.30 p.m. from the bottom of the Dordtsche Kil which had to be closed for ship traffic for about two hours. Also the car which had been stored on deck and which had drifted 150 meters away was pulled out of the water by a crane ship. The wreck was towed to the scrap harbour at 's-Gravendeel. The fairway had been re-opened until the operation started already on May 27. On May 28 Rijkswaterstaat will be looking for 70 hatch covers which were still resting on the bottom of the river. The 340 tons of fertilizer also must be salvaged because it is clumped in the channel Dutch reports with photos and video: https://www.transport-online.nl/site/91759/gezonken-binnenvaartschip-coxswain-op-dordtse-kil-geborgen-fotos/ https://www.rijnmond.nl/nieuws/168914/Gezonken-schip-Dordtsche-Kil-geborgen https://www.mediatv.nl/nieuws/22406/Gezonken-binnenvaartschip-geborgen-Dordtsche-Kil-Dordrecht--video-.html
