Passenger medevaced after fall on board
Denise Hammond, 64, from Virginia, fractured her hip and elbow in a fall on board the 'Costa Luminosa' on Oct 4, 2023, and Carnival Cruise staff aboard the Luminosa determined that she needed surgical intervention beyond its capacity after taking X-rays. On Oct 8 she was transported to the Siloam Hospital in Manado. The family began working with the U.S. embassy, which began linking them with transport companies to haul Hammond to the nearest hospital that could treat her. The closest such center was nearly 4,000 miles away in Bangkok. The first transport company charged $60,000 to get Hammond there, while the hospital needed a $40,000 down payment before she arrived. Neither payment covered Hammond's entire procedure. On Oct 11 the insurance company was assisting with transportation costs. Hammond finally arrived at the Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital for her initial evaluation on Oct 13. The family's GoFundMe page had raised nearly $30,000 until that afternoon.
Man who was supposed to have jumped over board landed in lifeboat
Fears were raised aboard the 'Costa Luminosa' on March 22, 2023, that a passenger had fallen overboard during a domestic dispute. The man had been arguing with his partner off the Central Queensland coast. He was believed to have fallen into the water as the argument escalated, prompting the crew to declare a 'man overboard' emergency. The siren went off with three calls of 'man overboard port side''. Lifebuoys were going in the ocean. Orange smoke activated when they hit the water, and they made a bit of a line to make them easier to find. The ship turned around and went back, but in the meantime it turned out that the man jumped had over the railing of deck s7 and landed on one of the lifeboats in front of them and scurried back onto the ship. The man had been locked on the veranda and out of the cabin, so he jumped over the balcony and onto the deck below and ran back up to try and get back in that way. 'The woman called 'man overboard' thinking he'd jumped into the water. So the whole 'man overboard' process was initiated.' The guest was confined to a stateroom at the end of the cruise.
