A fire broke out on the terrace of a cabin of the 'Costa Fortuna' at the Quay des Tourelles in the port of Fort-de-France on Jan 4, 2024. The local firefighters did not have to intervene in extinguishing the fire as the ship's crew quickly brought the fire under control. No injuries have been reported. The 'Costa Fortuna' was able to leave Martinique later the same evening to continue its cruise in the Caribbean.
Lost passenger found in Grand Etang Forest Reserve
Heyse Celine, a French passenger of the 'Costa Fortuna', who had been reported missing after entering the Grand Etang Forest reserve area, a naturally occurring body of water set in the crater of an extinct volcano, two days ago, has been rescued. The cruise ship had berthed in Grenada on Dec 18, 2023, and the woman had gone into the forest without a guide. She took a bus to Grand Etang and asked for directions to a waterfall, was unable to find the waterfall, and got lost on the return but was determined to find a way out. The next day, she called her daughter in France, who called the cruise line and then the police and me and the search began. She slept two nights in the mountains. The police found her in the morning of Dec 20. A drone which had been used in the search had located her in the mountains of Birchgrove, a community on the edge of the Grand Etang Forest Reserve in the centre of the island. She was taken to the hospital. She had cuts and bruises and was exhausted, but was expected to fully recover. Arrangements were being made for her to return to France by the christmas weekend. Police had earlier issued a missing person report without sharing details of her circumstances other than to say she entered the island on Dec 18 and last spoke with her friend on that day. The police also advised owners of hotels, Airbnb and apartments to be on the look for the 51-year-old woman.
