Water ingress on the Rhine

Thu Jul 11 21:23:51 CEST 2019 Timsen

On June 30, 2019, at 7.25 a.m. the "Aletta", 892 ts (EU-No.: 02317499), coming from Neuss, suffered water ingress in the foreship through a fan tube and started to list to starboard on the Rhine at river km 809. The ship had anchored on the Lower Rhine at Voerde in the Wesel community when an anchor pole broke and caused the vessel to tilt with ensuing water ingress. The crew grounded the ship at the river shore near the village Spellen where it got stuck partially flooded. The fire brigades from Möllen, Löhnen, Spellen, Friedrichsfeld and Voerde were alerted and started to drain the water with three submersible pumps. 50 forces were on scene as well as two fire boats. The cargo of 850 tons cement was not affected. Around 5 p.m. the cargo was to be transferred onto another ship. As this proved to be impossible, it was planned to tow the ship to the port of Wesel which failed due to wind force. The ship was thus taken to the foreport of the closer Friedrichsfeld lock for this purpose. On July 1 at 12.30 p.m. the ship left Voerde and headed to Duisburg where it arrived in basin A at 4.15 p.m. the same day and remained stationary by July 11.
