Divers insepcting wreck
On Oct 27, divers aprroached the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' to conduct an underwater survey and seal the fuel pipes. There were plans to siphon the 300 tons of oil that were remaining on board, however, it has been hampered, due to rough sea conditions to date.
Grounded ship broke in two after ten days
Asiatrans Vietnam has chartered two vessels of the Tan Cang Offshore Services JSC to investigate the grounding site of the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' near Lang Co Town, Duong Dang Trung, to deploy oil spill monitoring buoys, oil containment booms and absorbent pads. Technicians were hired to carry out a visual inspection and they had yet to detect possible leakages of oil from the vessel while local authorities continued to monitor the area. On Oct 18 the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' broke in two at the eastern coast of Vietnam, where it had grounded in the night, Oct 9, due to strong waves. Both halves were separated 25 meters. Vietnam's Department of Natural Resources and Environment was monitoring the situation regarding possible oil spills as the vessel had approximately 300 tons of oil on board. The Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee has directed the Provincial Border Guard Command to coordinate with the relevant agencies such as the provincial Military Command and Police, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Industry and Trade, and other local authorities. Freighter grounded enroutet to breakers
During very heavy weather and sea conditions the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' broke lose from a tug which was towing it to breakers in Alang in the night of Oct 9, 2020, and grounded the eastern coast of Vietnam. It buckled amidships and cracked. At the time of the incident there was no crew were on board. All crew members from the tug were well and accounted for. The authorities and all relevant organisations have been contacted and were providing assistance. Salvors have been appointed and were to attend the vessel as soon as the weather conditions permitted. The vessel was not carrying any cargo or fuel. Ut was found by locals in the morning of Oct 10 at the Thua Thien Hue Province coast, north of Da Nan. Province authorities and emergency teams arrived at the site and tried to communicate with the ship via VHF and loudspeaker, but to no avail. The convoy had left Hong Kong on Sep 29.
