Tanker troubled in Kiel Canal

Wed Mar 25 13:25:52 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Clearocean Marvel‘ was troubled on the Kiel Canal on March 24, 2020. The ship had to stop during its eastbound transit enroute from Hamburg to Ust-Luga southwest of Rendsburg as a high voltage cable was pulled over the waterway at Schülp, and ships were queuing around the construction site. When traffic was released at 4.30 p.m., the ship was unable to gain enough speed with own power and was pushed back against the pilings by the strong Southeastern winds. The tug 'Holtenau' was called from Kiel for assistance. It managed to pull the tanker into the fairway, but when trying to move forward, it was once again pushed towards the embankment. The canal had to be barred for ship traffic for another hour before the vessel could finally get in motion and completed its canal transit, arriving in Kiel at 8.15 p.m. It left the locks around 10 p.m. and continued to Ust-Luga, ETA March 26.
