Barges towed away, tug dewatered
The two barges that were pinned to the Racine Lock and Dam after they broke away from the "Austin C. Setton" were removed on Mar 5. At approximately 12:00 p.m. the tug "M.K. McNally" towed the two barges from the dam and placed them in the auxiliary lock chamber for an initial survey prior to being towed by the "Alabama" to Amherst Madison facility in Henderson, West Virginia. On Mar 4 the "Austin C. Settoon" esd released by opening the gate to let it go through. It went under the gate which tore alot of the tug up. It was dewatered after being recovered and transferred from the Racine Locks to Amherst Madison facility by the "Alabama". The unified command consisted of the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and the responsible party, Settoon Towing Company. There have been no reports of injuries or pollution. Tug removed from Racine Lock and Dam
The "Austin C. Settoon" was removed from the Racine Lock and Dam on Mar 4. Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley received a report at 1:24 p.m. that the tug was disengaged from the structure and was towed by the motor vessel Alabama. It was then moored to the auxiliary lock chamber at the Racine Locks. Two of her barges remained pinned against gates seven and eight of the dam and were stable. The unified command consists of the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Mason County Emergency Management, and the responsible party, Settoon Towing Company. The cause of the incident was under investigation.
Racine Lock and Dam open to traffic again
The Racine Lock and Dam were open to vessel traffic again after a barge was removed from the lock and dam on Mar 2. The Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley received a report at approximately 9:00 p.m. that the tug "Capt. Ed Harris" had removed the barge from the locking channel and took it to a nearby fleeting area. The remaining two barges remained pinned against gates seven and eight of the dam, with the vessel pinned against gates six and seven. Members of Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Huntington were on scene to conduct a marine casualty investigation. A unified command has been established, which consists of the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers and the responsible party, Settoon Towing Company. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley received a report that "Austin C. Settoon", pushing three barges loaded with approximately 3,780,000 gallons of natural gas condensate, allided with the lock wall at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Mar 2. The barges subsequently broke away.
