20 migrants rescued off Samana

Fri Sep 06 09:18:51 CEST 2024 Timsen

The 'Joseph Tezanos' and the Dominican Republic Navy patrol boat 'Capella' rescued 20 migrants from a disabled vessel taking on water in the Atlantic on the night of Sep 2. The crew of a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft detected a suspect 20-foot migrant vessel, approximately 30 nautical miles northeast of Samana. The aircrew reported seeing the migrants signaling for assistance and bailing out water from the makeshift vessel. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan diverted the 'Joseph Tezanos' and notified Dominican Republic Navy authorities, who directed the launch of the 'Capella' to the scene. Shortly thereafter, the 'Joseph Tezanos' arrived on scene, and the crew provided 18 life jackets to the migrants and assisted with the safe transfer of all 20 migrants, 18 men and two women, to the patrol boat. The 'Joseph Tezanos' returned 109 migrants to authorities at San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, on Aug 28, following two separate interdictions of irregular migration voyages in Mona Passage waters near Puerto Rico. The first interdiction occurred on the afternoon of Aug 26, after a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew sighted a 20-foot makeshift vessel northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan diverted the' Joseph Tezanos' to interdict the vessel. Following the interdiction, the crew of the cutter embarked 12 migrants, 11 of which claimed to be Dominican Republic nationals, while one other claimed to be Haitian. The second interdiction also occurred on the afternoon of Aug 26, after a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew sighted a 30-foot makeshift vessel northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The crews of a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations multi-role enforcement aircraft and an Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew also assisted with maintaining aerial surveillance of the vessel as surface units arrived on scene. Once on scene, Customs and Border Protection, Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action marine units and the 'Joseph Tezanos' interdicted the suspect vessel. 46 of 49 rescued migrants repatriated

Fri Jul 19 09:25:24 CEST 2024 Timsen

The 'Joseph Tezanos' repatriated 46 migrants to the Dominican Republic on July 17, following the interdiction of an irregular, unlawful migration voyage, approximately 34 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircrew from the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch notified Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders of a suspected migrant vessel spotted northwest of Aguadilla. The crews of the Coast Guard Cutters 'Heriberto Hernandez' and 'Richard Dixon', a CBP Air and Marine Operations boat crew, a Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action (FURA) boat crew and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen were diverted to respond.
