Cement carrier adrift in storm

Fri Mar 14 10:07:22 CET 2014 Timsen

Strong winds caused the ropes of the "UBC Cartagena" to break off its moorings at the cement factory in Kjøpsvik and went adrift in the dock in the evening of Mar 13, 2014. The ship was stopped by an emergency anchoring at 9.30 p.m. but needed towing assistance to get back to quay. The police was alerted, and the fire department had oil drainage equipment ready in case things got worse. Three tugs were sent to Kjøpsvik from Narvik, Harstad and Sortland as well as the pilot from Bodø on tour. The weather was still bad with strong winds of upto 25 m/sec and high waves. The first tug reached Kjøpsvik roughly around midnight. Also another cement carrier, the "Cembay", encountered trouble, but the situation regarding both ships seemed to be under control so far.
