Damaged patrol boat withdrew from Sabina Shoal for repairs

Tue Sep 17 11:59:12 CEST 2024 Timsen

The Philippines on Sep 14 withdrew the 'Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701)' from the Sabina Shoal due to adverse weather conditions, depleted supplies of daily necessities, and the need to evacuate personnel requiring medical care. Its presence in the waters had been further complicated by the structural damage to the vessel resulting from the deliberate ramming by the China Coast Guard on Aug 31. The 'Teresa Magbanua' had operated since April around Sabina Shoal. In June, Chinese coast guards armed with swords and knives attacked Philippine vessels in the contested waters, resulting in injuries and one soldier losing a thumb. A month later, China's largest Coastguard vessel dropped anchor in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, and in August, China had deployed 40 vessels to block the delivery of supplies to soldiers stationed in Sabina Shoal. Meanwhile the 'Teresa Magbanua' had been outnumbered by more than 50 Chinese ships. The ship was now sailing back to its homeport with its mission accomplished. Once the vessel was resupplied and repaired, and its crew recharged, the vessel would be ready to resume its mission alongside other assets from the Philippines' Coast Guard and Armed Force. Another vessel will immediately take over. Damaged patrol ship in danger of being pushed away

Mon Sep 02 10:23:29 CEST 2024 Timsen

Chinese vessels continued to swarm the BRP 'Teresa Magbanua' of the Philippine Coast Guard (PGC), that has been damaged by rammings about 75 nautical miles from Palawan on Aug 31, 2024. On Sep 1, the ship remained anchored off Escoda Shoal despite sustaining damage from being rammed multiple times by the China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel with bow number 5205. The vessel had lifted its anchor at 8 a.m. with the intention of loitering around Escoda Shoal. When it was already on the move at 12:07 p.m., the CCG vessel 5205 carried out the dangerous maneuver resulting to its direct ramming at the port side bow. The Chinese ship turned around, then rammed the PCG vessel anew, hitting the starboard quarter. The 'Teresa Magbanua' was originally surrounded by the tigs 175 and 186 People’s Liberation Army Navy and Chinese maritime militias. The 'Teresa Magbanua' suffered damage in its bridge wing and freeboard. No injuries to the crew were reported. At least two CCG vessels and two People’s Liberation Army Navy tugs were also spotted near the 'Teresa Magbanua', raising the possibility that China will attempt to tow the Philippine ship away.
