Two activists in solitary confinement
Two activists who were on board the 'Barcarole' on its way to Gaza have been placed in solitary confinement. The Arab-Israeli human rights organization Adalah reported on June 11, the Brazilian Thiago Avila and French MEP Rima Hassan. They were taken to separate detention centers. Thiago Ávila started a hunger strike on the morning of June 9. The four French activists will be deported on June 12 and 13. Israel previously gave the 12 activists the opportunity to leave the country immediately or to initiate deportation proceedings. Among the eight who did not agree were probably Hassan and the Dutchman Marco van Rennes. The Media organization Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) condemned on June 11 the detention of Yanis Mhamdi, a French journalist for the internet platform Blast. The journalist organization is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Mhamdi,. Mhamdi would have to sign documents from the Israeli authorities before being released. According to Mhamdi's employer Blast, their employee refused to sign, which is why he is still being held.
Ship taken to Ashdod - activists expelled from Israel
Israel has expelled the 12 activists from the Gaza solidarity ship 'Barcarole', which the army intercepted onon the morning of June 9 around 200 kilometers from the Gaza Strip's coast in international waters. They have arrived at Ben Gurion Airport to leave Israel and return to their home countries and scheduled to leave on June 10. The activists were met at the airport by consuls from their respective home countries. On board the "Madleen" were people from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, and Brazil. Eight of them refused to sign the necessary expulsion documents. Among them was French MEP Rima Hassan. In addition to Thunberg, three other activists signed the exit forms against this and were told to return to their home countries. Those who refused to sign the expulsion documents will be brought before a judicial authority in accordance with Israeli law to have their expulsion approved. Ship raided by Israel
Israeli military forces intercepted the ' Barcarole' on the early morning of June 8, in international waters while it was en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The ship, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was boarded at around 3:02 a.m. CET in pos. 31.95236° N, 32.38880° E. The vessel was carrying a small cargo of humanitarian items such as rice, baby formula, food, and medical supplies. The crew, consisting of 12 international volunteers, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and French Member of European Parliament Rima Hassan, were detained by Israeli forces and the cargo was confiscated.
