Engine room fire on Oude Maas
A fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Balder' on the afternoon of July 18, 2025, en route from Duisburg with a cargo of coal, on the Oude Maas River near Rhoon. The fire was noticed around 3:30 p.m. and was causing a lot of smoke. Because the vessel had become disabled and could no longer moor independently, firefighters were transported on board using the ferry 'Rhoonsche Veer' while the barge was drifting near the Rhoonse Grienden. The fire department reported at around 4:00 p.m. that the fire had been extinguished and that the vessel would be ventilated to regain access to the engine room. The three crew members were unharmed. Rijkswaterstaat and the police were on site with boats and making plans to moor the vessel. The cause of the fire was still unknown. It has since bern berthed in Rotterdam. As of July 22, it remained stationary in pos. 51° 39' N 004° 23' E.
