Hammonia Antofagasta unloaded after deadly fire

Fri Apr 05 13:49:19 CEST 2013 Timsen

Hapag-Lloyd has chartered the "Cape Melville" to replace the "Hammonia Antofagasta" that suffered a deadly boiler room fire on Mar 25, 2013. It fixed the 2,742-TEU-vessel for a single voyage from Spain to the Americas. The ship has arrived in Las Palmas on Apr 2 where took over containers that were onboard the "Hammonia Antofagasta" as the extent of the damage to the stricken boxship made it impossible” to continue a westbound voyage tied to its Mediterranean Pacific liner service. Two seafarers had died from asphyxiation when the blaze broke out. The "Cape Melville" left Las Palmas on Apr 5 bound for Cartagena with an ETA of Apr 15 before calling on Los Angles, Oakland, Tacoma, Vancouver and Portland.
