Orcas damaged sailing yacht
The 'Amidala', en route from Povoa de Varzim, was attacked by orcas off the coast of northwestern Spain on Aug 25, 2024. They damaged the vessel's rudder, prompting Salvamento Marítimo to tow the boat ashore. One of the two crew members seriously injured her hand during the towing manoeuvre amid rough sea conditions and was evacuated by helicopter to hospital The 'Amidala' had alerted the MRCC in Cape Finisterre shortly before 4 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT). The crew, a man and a woman, both Belgian nationals, reported damage to the rudder after it was rammed by an unknown number of orcas. Adverse weather, with winds of up to 35 knots and waves up to three metres high, hampered the towing operation, which took more than five hours until reaching the port.
