Efforts to stabilize abandoned cargo ship continued

Thu Dec 04 09:33:13 CET 2014 Timsen

On Dec 3 the efforts to safely stabilize the "Amaranthus" in the bay of Pórto Vró̱mi continued. The Port Authority took all actions to prevent the possibility of a rupture of the hull and possible contamination of the water. A special floating barrier to isolate any possible marine oil pollution was laid out. Greek report with photo: http://imerazante.gr/2014/12/03/92699

Another smuggler ship abandoned on Zakynthos

Wed Dec 03 09:20:11 CET 2014 Timsen

On Dec 1, 2014, the "Amaranthus" was found abandoned by the crew with its the bow stuck fast at the small port in the bay of Pórto Vró̱mi in Anafonitria on Zakynthos. The ship was not detected by any resident but a vehicle of a Coast Patrol west coast. On board, they found hundreds of boxes of cigarettes, which occupied about half the space of the holds. When checking the ship's documents it was found that they mentioned both the names "Amaranthus" and "Isik 2" with Moldovan flag which still was evident on the hull although rudimentary having been erased. They also found lists of names of crew members of Ukrainian origin and alerted the police to help in their identification. The ship was secured to eliminate the risk of sinking and the fire department alerted to pump outsea water that had flowed into the cargo hold. Fire fighters placed a cement seal on the hull which was damaged by rocks. The adverse weather conditions that prevailed in the region did not allow towing the ship to the harbour. The transfer was planned for the afternoon of Dec 2 if weather conditions permitted.
