Two tankers blacklisted for ties with Houthi supporter
The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (USB) has blacklisted the two tankers 'Abyss' and 'Oceania' and four shipping companies for their ties to Sa’id al-Jamal, a Houthi financial facilitator, and the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This action marked the sixth time Al-Jamal has been targeted by the USB since December. Al-Jamal’s networks help facilitate the export of Iranian products to benefit the IRGC and the Houthis. One of the sanctioned. The 'Abyss' was involved in a previous incident with Euronav in 2023. The 'Oceania', previously owned by Euronav and now named 'SA Oceania', after being sold, participated in a STS transfer of around 500,000 barrels of fuel oil from the 'Abyss' in March 2023. The origin of the Iranian cargo being transported remains unknown.
Tankers NUC off the United Arab Emirates
Off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, at least four and possibly five tankers have lost control of the rudder on Aug 3, 2021. Military sources reported that one ship has been boarded by Iranian forces or persons affiliated with Iran. The first report came via UKMTO, which relied on a third party. The agency reported an incident involving one ship and did not provide further details about the "non-piracy incident" and the ship involved. It may be a hijacking, UKMTO said in tthe afternoon. At the same time, the 'Golden Brilliant' indicated it was "not under command". UKMTO advised other vessels in the area to be very careful and not to approach. The tankers 'Queen Ematha', 'Jag Pooja' and 'Abyss' got also out of control a little later, and it was assumed that the 'Asphalt Princess' has been boarded, probably by Iranian troops or persons affiliated with Iran. It would be the fifth ship to run into trouble. An Oman Royal Air Force Airbus C-295MPA, a maritime patrol aircraft, flew in circles for hours over the area where the ships were. The reported navigation problems led to speculation about a possible cyber attack in the area, but at least two of the ships have since sailed on.
