Relatives of missing crew claimed seizure of Van Manila container ship
The boxship "Van Manila" (IMO-No.: 9412816), was seized after a Shanghai Maritime Court ruling, following the claim of the relatives of the missing crew members of the "Xiang Zhou" which sank on Apr 6 east of Yangtze estuary after the collision with the container ship. Of the 14 crew members, only two were rescued, and the other 12 went missing. The Korean master of the "Van Manila" had switched the AIS off after the accident and fled the collision site. The ship had been leaving Shanghai at the time of collision. It was ordered back to the port and was being anchored at Shanghai anchorage since Apr 6.
Search for 12 crew members after sinking in Yangtse estuary
In the morning of Apr 6, 2017, the "Xiang Zhou" sank with a cargo of 4.850 tons steel coils en route from Nantong, Jiangsu Province, to Busan, South Korea. after a suspected collision in the Yangtse estuary. The ship had a crew of 14, two of whom were rescued by a Panama-flagged vessel. The Shanghai Maritime Authority was alerted at 1 a.m. and launched an SAR operation for the other 12 crew members. The bureau sent five rescue boats to the scene and found an abandoned lifeboat near to the sinking site. The SAR operation was carried out by on the whole 17 ships.
