Fire on boxship in Manila

A fire broke out aboard the "Cape Moreton" while it was docked at the Manila International Container Terminal in the North Harbour of Tondo, Manila, on Sep 12, 2015, at 09.12 a.m. after an explosion inside the ship, which was manned by a Russian crew. Smoke was first seen billowing from freight containers around 9:15 a.m. following an initial explosion inside. Around 20 fire trucks of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) were sent to put out the flames, the Coast Guard dispatched the "SARV-001 - San Juan" and "SARV 3502 - Nueva Vizcaya", while BFP personnel boarded the vessel and assisted the ship’s crew. The fire reached 3rd alarm at 9:52 a.m. and 4th alarm at 11:24 a.m. The fire reached the fourth alarm and was declared out at 5:37 p.m. 20 firetrucks and the PCG vessels "DF-309", "DF-334" and "DF-312" were engaged fighting the fire. It took almost nine hours to stop it as responders were unable to immediately penetrate the lower deck, being unfamiliar with the ship. The cause of the fire was still being determined. The PCG initially pointed to the ship’s cargohold 4 and 5, where the fire originated. The cargohold was found to have containers loaded with sodium hydroxide.
