Strong waves caused by the tropical storm Dianmu which raged over Taiwan damaged the “OceanLaLa” while she was underway from Makong to Taichung Harbor in the evening of Aug 8 with 327 passengers. The National Rescue Command Center and the Coast Guard Administration sent five patrol ships to escort the ferry on the final 8,7 miles to port. Military helicopters and harbor tugs also came to the rescue. The ship berthed in Taichung at around 11 p.m. on Aug 8, where seven passengers and crew members were taken to hospital for treatment. The ferry had faced waves up to 6 meters high instead of the normal 2,5 meters.
