Wallem Group captain and crew win Seafarer of the Year award
Wallem Group’s Captain Deepanjan Ganguli and the crew of the cargo vessel True Patriot have won ‘Seafarer of the Year’, sponsored by TATA NYK Shipping, at the Lloyd’s List Asia awards. The award was presented to Captain Ganguli at a ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore which was attended by almost 400 people. Captain Ganguli and his crew rescued a seafarer from a sinking liferaft in hazardous weather conditions while travelling from Brazil to Singapore. Capt Ganguli and his crew were commended for demonstrating the commercial realities of rescues, one that showed professionalism, focus, good seamanship and, not least, luck. The Lloyd’s List Award series recognises the industry’s successes, setting a benchmark for excellence while rewarding innovative ideas and concepts that have pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Bulkcarrier saved distressed yachtie
A 32 year old French was rescued by the "True Patriot". Luc Pierre Bernard left Rodrigues aboard his sailboat in the afternoon of May 20, 2016. On May 23 at 1 a.m. he found that his boat was taking on water. He launched his lifeboat and launched a distress flare which was spotted by the cargo ship which was three miles away. The True Patriot immediately alerted the Coast Guard which summoned the cargo ship to rescue the man. He was safely taken aboard on May 24 at 8 a.m.
