Gothenburg Hails "Historic" First LNG Bunkering

he Port of Gothenburg today announced it will reach a "historic milestone" with not only the port's, but Sweden's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation. "We have worked resolutely for a long time to create a situation where a ship could bunker liquefied natural gas in Gothenburg. We have now managed to achieve our ambition and we are extremely pleased with the outcome," said Jill Söderwall, Vice President and head of commercial operations at the Energy Port in Gothenburg. Rotterdam Welcomes First Ship to Bunker LNG

The Port of Rotterdam started its first LNG bunkering operation for a sea-going vessel on Tuesday. On Sunday, the chemical tanker Ternsund arrived in Rotterdam for the first time to unload naphtha and gas oil at Vopak in the Botlek. On Monday afternoon, the ship was shifted a terminal at the Willem Alexanderhaven for the bunkering operation. First, the temperature of the fuel tank was cooled down from ambient temperature to operating temperature. With the aid of nitrogen, the temperature was reduced from +20 °C to -162 °C in eighteen hours. Then the actual bunkering of Shell LNG started. The bunkering will be completed on Wednesday morning, and the vessel will then continue to Gothenburg. The product tanker, operated by the Swedish shipping company Terntank, will receive Rotterdam’s first incentive given for LNG bunkering - a premium amounting to a discount of ten percent on the seaport dues. Ternsund is the first newbuilt LNG-fuelled product tanker. First LNG-fueled vessel TERNSUND to bunker at Rotterdam in w/c Aug 8

The Port of Rotterdam is to carry out its first LNG bunkering operation next week, according to a statement from the company on August 3. The vessel to be fueled will be the Ternsund, a dual-fuel product tanker belonging to Swedish shipping line Terntank. The vessel is currently on its maiden voyage, and is expected to deliver a shipment of naphtha at Vopak Botlek in Rotterdam the weekend of August 6. After the delivery, the ship is expected to dock at the Willem Alexander Terminal where it will be bunkered via truck using LNG from the Gate terminal. The procedure is expected to last approximately three days, as the vessel is currently running on marine gas oil and the on-board fuel tanks need to be cooled before they can be loaded.
