Ship deployed for wreck removal in Takaroa
For an operation to dismantle the wreck of the 'Tamarii Tuamotu', 856 dwt (IMO: 6706216; built 1967) of the vanished Vonken Company, stranded on a beach in Takaroa since 1998, all the equipment and machinery necessary for this project was taken on board the 'Taporo 9' in Papeete on Nov 28, 2023. The ship sailed at 6:30 p.m. for Takaroa on the Tuamotu Atoll. The Raimanu Services was contracted to remove the wreck which is more than 66 meters long and seven meters wide with a weight of around 488 tonnes. The ship will therefore have to be cut into several parts during this operation. The cost of the operation amounts to 52 million francs. The depollution was already carried out after the ship ran aground. The project will take a maximum of four months. A team of five employees will be sent to the atoll and two other people will be hired on site. All waste collected after this dismantling will be entrusted, upon arrival in Tahiti, to an organization specializing in the processing of this type of material.
