Crack in tank caused oil spill

On Dec 18, 2012, the "Southern Bay" has spilt large amounts of oil during cleaning operations in the port of Oranjestad in Aruba. The Disaster Office has the oil cleaned up. The oil slick that arose had a size of 1000 square meters almost immediately drifted to the open sea. The ship is calling at Aruba every five weeks bringing cheese, milk and other products from the Netherlands. After the accident the ship was detained until a fine of $ 30,000 was paid and the costs for the clean-up were settled. Two cruise ships and other boats which have been contaminated by the oil. The cause of the leak may have been a crack in a fuel tank caused by welding. The tank had undergone an overhaul in November. The oil leaked into a tank with ballast water and further into the port.
