Captain of ferry fined for allision in 2023

Thu Feb 20 10:30:16 CET 2025 Timsen

The captain of the 'Stavanger' was fined 50,000 Norwegian crowns by the prosecution after an accident of the ferry on Nov 21, 2023, in which eight passengers were injured, when the ship, en route from Oppedal, slammed into the quay at Lavik with 29 passengers and nine crew members on board. The police believed the captain was not careful enough when docking in the port. The arrival procedure was not followed in its entirety, so that the ferry headed towards the quay in the wrong mode and at too high a speed. The violation of the arrival procedure was a contributing cause of the allision. If the arrival procedure had been followed, the accident could have been averted. Internally, the shipping company Norled has conducted an investigation after the incident to identify improvement opportunities and measures to prevent a similar incident from happening again. The captain has received follow-up from the occupational health service and has had close dialogue with his immediate superior after the incident. The captain will look at the police's conclusion and based on this consider whether or not he should adopt the fine. If the captain is a member of the Norwegian Naval Officers' Association, the union will assist him in the assessment. Passenger was infected with corona virus

Wed Sep 23 10:51:59 CEST 2020 Timsen

On Sep 22, 2020, Norled stated that they have been informed by the municipal chief in Høyanger that a passenger who has taken the 'Stavanger' between Lavik and Oppedal has been diagnosed with coronavirus. He had taken the ferry at 11.50 a.m. on Sep 20 on board a bus. The risk of infection for other passengers on the ferry was considered very low and unlikely. The bus passengers were tested on arrival in Stavanger.

Ferry out of service, no spare ferry available

Wed Jun 12 20:22:48 CEST 2019 Timsen

On June 11, 2019, around 6 p.m. the "Stavanger" sustained a problem with one main engine and had to be sidelined in Ytre Oppedal. The spare ferry "Bjørnefjord" was also out of service because it lacked an important part for the engine. On June 12 only two ferries served the heavily trafficked E39 connection over the Sognefjord between Lavik and Oppedal. Norled was working on getting one of the two ferries operational again.
