Tanker officer imprisonded for illegally discharging oily waste

Tue Nov 22 12:32:09 CET 2016 Timsen

A senior officer ofthe "Cielo Di Milano" was sentenced to eight months in federal prison on Nov 21, 2016, after previously admitting to trying to hide violations of ocean pollution laws. Giacomo Curatolo, 50, pleaded guilty in August to a charge of conspiring to violate the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. Curatolo, of Custonaci, Sicily, admitted the crew of the "Cielo di Milano" had intentionally bypassed pollution prevention equipment by discharging oily waste from the engine room through the vessel's sewage system into the sea. Curatolo was the vessel's chief engineer when, in January 2015, he made false statements to U.S. Coast Guard personnel during an inspection and ordered crew members to destroy the vessel's sounding log, which records the contents of storage tanks aboard the ship which made multiple stops in New Jersey, as well as ports in Maryland and Florida. The ship's first assistant engineer, Danilo Maimone, also has pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to obstruct justice and was scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 18, 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. In addition to the prison term, Judge Susan D. Wigenton sentenced Curatolo to one year of supervised release and ordered him to pay a $5,000.
