Four complaints filed against ship's officers
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has filed complaints against four crew members of the 'Happy Hiro' on May 31 for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple injuries, and damage to property before the Antique Prosecutor’s Office. The complaints included the captain, the second mate, and two other officers. The captain is Croatian and the second mate is Romanian.
Bulk carrier inspected after collision
The Philippine Navy ship 'PC 370' as well as an Air Force aircraft were involved in the SAR operations conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after the 'JOT-18' capsized and sank in the Sulu Sea. Port state control officers from the Coast Guard have boarded the bulk carrier for inspections and checked its records, logbook, validating details, and action done before and after the incident with the fishing boat. They were also examining the seaworthiness of the bulk carrier. The BRP 'Panglao' transported the 13 survivors to the port after getting clearance from the Bureau of Quarantine. Reportedly, 12 out of the 13 fishermen suffered scratches while the other one had a minor wound on his head.
Seven missing after collision
The 'Happy Hiro' was in collision with the Philippine fishing vessel 'JOT-18' on May 28 at around 5.30 p.m. PST in the Sulu Sea, en route from Taicang to Kwinana. The bulk carrier turned to Panay island and anchored off Culasi in the morning of May 29. The fishing vessel sank, of the 20 fishermen on board 13 were rescued by a nearby fishing vessel. They were immediately transferred to the 'Happy Hiro' which ferried them to Lipata, Culasi, Antique to seek further assistance. 12 of the rescued fishermen had minor scratches. One had a wound on the head. He was immediately given first aid and was now stable. The majority of the rescued Filipino fishermen are residents of Bantayan Island, Cebu. They were identified as Roderico Mata, Randy Mata, Renie Espinosa, Mario Quezon, Sammuel Ducay, Rendil Dela Peña, Martin E. Flores Jr., Jupiter Jbañiez, Andring Pasicaran, Jonel Mata, Joemar Pahid, Arjay Barsaga, and Donde Petiero.
