Return of Spiriti of Bermuda delayed due to hurricane
The return of the "Spirit of Bermuda" to Bermuda has been delayed by Hurricane Humberto. The ship has been in Belfast, Maine, for an eight-week refit. It spends a few days in Gloucester, Maine, wjere ot arrived on Sep 16, 2019, before it heads home. The crew will remain in watches as to ensure the ships security. They hoped to set sail for Bermuda early on Sep 19. The ship will welcome pupils from Dellwood Middle School for the first voyage of the year on Sep 30.
Sail training ship disabled by large wave
The "Spirit of Bermuda" encountered a large wave and suffered engine failure and ripped sails, as well as an injury to a crew member on board on Jan 19, 2016. At 2.26 p.m. the sail training ship contacted the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre while under way in Murray’s Anchorage. The “Spirit of Bermuda" with 28 persons on board, reported that the crew member had suffered injuries to his back and fingers and vessel was now in need of a tow into St. George’s Harbour. Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre immediately dispatched the pilot boat "St. George" and the tug "Faithful", while the casualty was immobilized on board pending further medical treatment. The pilot boat arrived on scene a short time later, the "Faithful" was on scene just after 4 p.m. At 4.45 p.m., the tug had taken the "Spirit of Bermuda" in tow from Murray’s Anchorage to Dockyard, accompanied by pilot boat and was assisted by the "Dragon" once in proximity of Dockyard.
