Offshore ship rescued 15 migrants
The 'Simon Stevin' rescued 15 migrants, while en route from Turkey to Zeebrugge. The crew noticed a sloop with 15 refugees in the evening of Nov. 10, 2022. Eight men, two women and five children had been drifting for several days on the Mediterranean Sea, 75 kilometers off the Algerian coast. The crew took the refugees on board in good health, but weakened and hypothermic. The crew gave them food, drinks, warm clothing, a bed and blankets to recuperate. They spent the night on board and were picked up by the Algerian coastguard on the morning of Nov. 11. Deadly work accident in Zeebrugge
A crew member of the "Simon Steven" fell down 12 meters when he stepped backwards while operating a crane to move metal pipes in Zeebrugge on Jan 28, 2019. The 25 year old victim died in a hospital in Bruges at night. He had been busy with the remote control of the crane and ended up on a lower deck. An initial investigation showed that he was in a place where this was not permitted. Follow-up research must show whether this was due to absent-mindedness or lack of safety on board.
