Tilt could have rnded worse

Fri Aug 22 22:16:49 CEST 2025 Timsen

The unexpected listing of the 'Silja Serenade' caused a seemingly dangerous situation near the Åland Islands on Aug 19 at about 12:50 a.m. enroute from from Stockholm to Helsinki. According to Tallink Silja's Communications Director Marika Nöjd, the tilting did not cause a dangerous situation. If someone had been caught under a pile of plates, that would have been unfortunate, but those restaurants were already closed by this point when the plates and a refrigerator had fallen over. Dozens of drinks were spilled on the floor. If that tilt had happened when the deck kiosk was open, the staff could have been seriously injured. The space is small, and there would not have been time to react. A second roll tilted the ship so much that passengers had trouble getting from the cabin to the corridor. Shampoo and makeup flew off shelves in the bathroom. There were a lot of people at the reception asking about what had happened. The employees were walking around quickly and talking on their walkie-talkies. There was no public announcement because most of the passengers were already asleep. The ship listed by about six degrees at most. According to a Tallink Silja employee, the ship's captain told the workers that a navigation error forced them to make a sharp turn, which led to the tilt. An internal company investigation has been launched. The weather did not affect the tilting. The sea conditions were excellent at the time of the incident. Ferry unexpectedly listed due to sharp rudder angle

Thu Aug 21 09:30:47 CEST 2025 Timsen

In the middle of the night of Aug 19, 2025, the 'Silja Serenade' unexpectedly turned sharply between Åland and Helsinki, causing it to list significantly and passengers became worried. The turn was stronger than planned due to a too large rudder angle, but that it did not pose any danger. Passengers expressed criticism for the lack of information about the incident, while the shipping company explained that the night was not considered appropriate to announce details and risk waking more people. China and glass in the ship's restaurants had crashed and broken. Hans Friberg, operations manager at Tallink Silja, was notified of the incident during the night. Tallink Grupp connects first two vessels to shore power at Port of Stockholm

Thu Jun 20 12:31:37 CEST 2019 arnekiel

Tallink Grupp has this week started using shore power to provide electricity for two of its vessels, Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony, while they are alongside in port to reduce the environmental impact of the vessels and to minimise air pollution in the Nordic capital cities the company’s vessels visit. Silja Symphony and Silja Serenade, sister ships operating on the Helsinki-Stockholm route, have been piloting use of the shore power connection facility since February this year and are the two first vessels to be connected to the new facility aiming to minimize the environmental impact from ships within the Baltic Sea region.
