Provisional repairs completed
On Feb 28, 2025, the San Enrique shipyard in A Coruña – formerly Vulcano – has re-delivered the ‘Shang De Wu Yi Shan’, after completing its provisional repair. The Jiangsu Changyang shipyard contracted the shipyard to undertake boilermaking and other annex work. When the stowed cranes fell overboard, there was significant damage to the deck and starboard side. Part of the cargo that collapsed remained as debris on the deck, and another was lost in the area near the dock, in the Ares and Prioriño estuary. After several inspections by the entities involved, the Port Authority of A Coruña, the Chinese Classification Society and the delegated representative of the shipowner, it was agreed to remove the remains of the cranes, and subsequently, a scope of minimum repairs that would allow the provisional navigation of the ship to a shipyard where the definitive repair could be carried out. Having several offers, the shipowner opted for San Enrique for the provisional repairs in A Coruña. After formalizing the contract in mid-February, the shipyard quickly mobilized personnel, resources and materials on site at the port. Central Government has not prepared any official document on crane loss
The central Government has claimed that it has not prepared any official document on the accident of the 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan'in the waters of Galicia. In a resolution recently signed by the director general of the Merchant Navy, Gustavo Santana Hernández, after a request under the Transparency Law, the Executive pointed out that "there was no record of the preparation of any official report on the incident. The response from the head of the Merchant Navy also added that "all actions of the maritime administrations and operators involved (ship captain, consignee) took place by telephone, radio or email." The remains of the two large cranes which fell overboard remained at the bottom of the sea. One of them is 80 miles from Cape Ortegal, and at a depth of 4,700 meters, and the other is about two miles west of the outer port of Ferrol. In the latter case, they are at a shallower depth, which can pose a risk to the fishing boats that fish in the area, as their nets could get caught in the remains of the cranes. On Dec 6, shortly before 11:00 p.m., when the 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' was sailing off the coast of the province of La Coruña, the cranes broke off for reasons that have not yet been disclosed. Heavy load carrier shifted to Langosteira
On Dec 17 shortly after 9 a.m., the 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' docked with the support of the tugs 'Ibáizabal Diez' and 'Ibáizabal Doce' in Langosteira, the outer port of A Coruña, after 11 days at anchor in the Ares estuary, The ship had started to move at 8 a.m. with a pilot on board and escorted by one tug. Before, the remains of the large cranes had been cut off on board, so that there was no risk of them breaking away during the crossing, which took just over an hour. This was one of the safety conditions required by the Maritime Authority of A Coruña to authorise the ship to enter Langosteira. Another one was a good weather forecast, and light seas were expected, with waves of between 1 and 1.5 metres and good visibility. The ship had already proven that it meets the stability requirements. Now that it has been moored, it will be subjected to a new inspection, more exhaustive than those carried out in Ares, to check if it complies with the regulations of the IMO to be able to resume its journey. It remains to be seen whether the hull, with visible damage above the waterline, will have to be repaired first, and what to do with the pieces of the gantry cranes on the deck. In addition, the metal structures lost at the bottom of the Ares estuary some 2.2 miles from the outer port of Ferrol have to be recovered.
