52 people rescued in two missions
The 'Sea Eye 5' has rescued 52 people from distress at sea on the early morning of Sep 7. Among the rescued were three babies and two pregnant women. The NGO ship had responded to an emergency call from the organization Alarm Phone at around 3:00 a.m. and was able to rescue 43 people from acute life-threatening situations. A few hours later, at around 6:00 a.m., the crew spotted another unseaworthy boat with nine people, who were also safely taken aboard the ship. The port of Brindisi was designated by the Italian authorities to disembark the migrants.
144 migrants rescued, 53 medevaced
On Aug 31, the ' Sea Eye 5' rescued 144 migrants from an unseaworthy wooden boat, among them one pregnant, in the Mediterranean. Many of them were dehydrated and needed to be medevaced. 53 survivors were handed over to the Italian Coastguard south of Lampedusa. The 'Sea Eye 5' was designated Tarent as safe port, which took another 40 hours.
17 migrants rescued in Mediterranean
The 'Sea-Eye 5' rescued 17 people from an unseaworthy boat on July 24. At noon, one person's condition worsened – due to inhaling fuel beforehand, and had to be medevaced by a helicopter'. Also the health of a second rescued person on board deteriorated, and the condition was too critical to keep her on board for an extended period. An Italian Coast Guard vessel took the seriously injured person on board and transported her to Lampedusa for further treatment. The ship with the remaining people then made its way to Vibo Valentia, where all 15 people were able to disembark after an exhausting, nearly 30-hour journey.
