Scar found on hull of Osumi, Tobiuo taken to Hiroshima

The Maritime Self-Defense Force found a 30-centimeter-long scar on the port side of the "Osumi" on Jan 16. The scar is believed to have resulted from the collision with the fishing vessel "Tobiuo". Officials of the MSDF’s Kure District Headquarters boarded a ship at the Kure Naval Base shortly after 9 a.m., and traveled to the "Osumi", which remained anchored off the coast. During their inspection, the officials discovered the scar running horizontally near the center of its port side, about one meter above the water level. As there was no way for a white coating to get on the hull, the scar must have been made when it collided with the fishing boat. The same day the 6th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters raised the capsized "Tobiuo", which was earlier towed off a sea route, onto a salvage barge. At about 9:30 a.m., two divers examined the hull of the boat. About two hours later, a crane vessel came alongside the boat to salvage it.The capsized boat was turned back to an upright position and its wheelhouse was lifted into view. Two of sunk fishing boat died after collision

After the collision of the 7,6-m-leisure fishing boat "Tobiuo" on Jan 15 morning the captain of the boat died. The four men aboard, all residents of the city of Hiroshima, were thrown into the water following the collision in the Seto Inland Sea off the city of Otake, which occurred at around 8 a.m. They were rescued by the MSDF vessel and another vessel passing nearby. The captain Kiyoshi Takamori, 67, died at around 11:10 p.m. at a hospital in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, while Koji Otake, 66, who also had remained unconscious and in a critical condition, faded away on Jan 16. The remaining two - Shoji Teraoka, 67, and Norito Fushida, 67 - were not injured. The four men were not wearing life vests at the time of the accident. The sea was calm and the weather was fair when the accident occurred. The "Osumi" was moving in the same direction as the "Tobiuo" and slowed down to make way for the boat when the accident occurred. Shoji Teraoka, 67, one of the two survivors aboard the boat, said that after the boat passed the "Osumi" on the latter's starboard side, the "Osumi" first turned to starboard to avoid a crossing freighter, accelerated, and then turned to port, hitting and capsizing the fishing boat. The Japan Coast Guard recorded the same testimony from Teraoka and found marks believed to be from the collision on the MSDF vessel's port-side hull. The Coastguard raised the fishing boat on Jan 16 after it had been secured with air bags and started investigating the accident on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death.The Japanese government promised to undertake an exhaustive investigation into the cause of the accident. The Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, the supervisor of the MSDF, was instructed to cooperate with the coast guard investigation in this regard. The prime minister's office set up an emergency task force to deal with the incident, and Japan Transport Safety Board investigators began an investigation into the collision. The "Tobiuo" had left a berthing facility in the city of Hiroshima around 7:10 a.m. and was on its way to Kabuto Island. Osumi sank fishing vessel

The Japanese fishing boat "Tobiuo" sank in the on Jan 14, 2014, and two of its occupants were in critical condition after the collision with the "Osumi". The leisure fishing boat with four aboard and the naval vessel belonging to the Maritime Self-Defense Force collided in the Seto Inland Sea off Hiroshima prefecture. The four on the boat including its captain were thrown into the water, but the "Osumi" managed to rescue them, Kyodo News reported. The captain and another person were in critical condition while the two others were not hurt. The cause of the collision was not immediately known. The sea was calm and the weather was fair at the time of the incident. The "Osumi" was on its way to a shipyard in Okayama prefecture for a regular overhaul at the time of the collision. It had 135 crew members aboard.
