Repair of damaged boxship not economically feasible
The "Safmarine Meru" has been so badly damaged in the collision with the German-owned container ship "Northern Jasper" on May 7 around 120 miles east of Ningbo and the subsequent cargo fire which raged four days, while she was enroute from Qingdao to Ningb, that Maersk Line has decided to scrap the ship. The damage was too extensive to make repairs economically feasible. Maersk Line took the decision in agreement with the vessel's agents and inspectors and were currently reviewing the possible scrapping yards in the region that meet the requirements for responsible scrapping. A yard near the vessel's current position will be selected as the ship will need a tow. The 22-man crew, which had consisted mostly of Filipinos and Indians, but alsofrom China, Russia, Sri Lanka, Romania, South Africa and Thailand had safely abandoned ship onto the "Northern Jasper" after the accident. At the time of the collision the "Safmarine Meru" had less than 400 full containers on board.

Container ship towed into port
Chinese tugs have towed the "Safmarine Meru" to the Meishan container terminal in Ningbo after the fire on board was finally extinguished. Maersk Line announced on May 13 that there was now gained full control on the situation. Chinese firefighters have extinguished the last remnants on May 12. The next day at 5.10 p.m. the ship arrived in Ningbo after being towed 78 nautical miles from the accident site. The priorities now were to safely discharge the cargo and conduct inspections to further survey the damages to the vessel.
