Role as emergency shelter for refugees ends
The role of the 'Rossini' as an emergency refugee shelter in Bach upon the Danube in the Regensburg district is to end on July 31, after about 2,5 years. Asylum seekers were moving to a smaller, decentralized shelter in the district. A total of approximately 90 people were still accommodated on the ship. The district office cited the rental of other living spaces in various communities and a change in immigration patterns as reasons for closing the emergency shelter. A total of around 630 asylum seekers have been accommodated on the ship since the start of Feb 2023. At its peak, up to 190 people had been on board at the same time. The remaining 52 residents will now be distributed among decentralized accommodations and the remaining emergency shelters. The ship was moored primarily in Bach, but also in Donaustauf, several kilometers upstream, for a good six months. The cost of the emergency accommodation on the ship was less than €25 per person for an overnight stay. According to the police, things on the "Rossini" were unobtrusive and peaceful. After the emergency shelter has closed, the "Rossini" will head downstream on the Danube to the shipyard in Linz.
Fire in galley quickly under control
On Dec 12, 2024, at 2.15 p.m. a fire broke out in the galley of the 'Rossini', which is actually used as a refugee ship for Ukrainians at Noordeinde in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. The ship was evacuated for safety reasons. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly with several units. It was not yet clear how the fire started. An ambulance was called as a precaution, but no one was injured. Once the ship hads been ventilated and cleaned, the residents could return on board. Since April 2022, approximately200 refugees from Ukraine have been staying on the hotel ship. Refugee ship moved away from Regensburg due to spawning season
To protect fishing stocks, the 'Rossini', actually serving as emergency accommodation for refugees in the Regensburg district, can no longer be moored near Donaustauf and returned to Bach on the Danube in the afternoon of Feb 22, 2024. The ship, which currently accommodates 180 people, was in Bach from Feb to July 2023, before moving to Donaustauf, after the ship was no longer allowed to be at the pier during the spawning season, which begins in March. A corresponding permit was therefore only granted until Feb 2024. The situation is different in Bach, where since 2009, mooring has been possible all year at the community's pier. How long the ship will stay this time is unclear. According to the district office, up to 45 asylum seekers per month are currently assigned to the Regensburg district; until recently there were 100. The department of the authority responsible for accommodating people is assuming that the numbers will increase again in the spring. However, precise forecasts are difficult.
