Police officers comb seashore at Rosia Bay searching for a missing Syrian seafarer

Wed Mar 11 10:30:50 CET 2015 arnekiel

Police officers combed the seashore at Rosia Bay yesterday searching for a Syrian seafarer who jumped off his ship last Saturday and has been missing since. A second Syrian seafarer from the same vessel was rescued by a police launch just after midnight last Saturday. He was found floating off the South Mole and a major search and rescue operation coordinated by the Gibraltar Port Authority was launched to locate the second man. Police initially thought the two men were stowaways but it was later confirmed they were crewmen off the ship Rising Falcon, a cargo vessel anchored off Camp Bay. The search at sea proved futile and there has been no sign of the missing Syrian since. On Saturday, the survivor was brought ashore suffering from shock, hyperthermia and scraped hands. He was given a medical check at St Bernard’s Hospital and was later arrested for illegally entering. Police were going to charge him at the weekend and take him to court ahead of deportation. However the vessel’s ship agent revealed the same company had a second ship anchored off Gibraltar and the seafarer was allowed to voluntarily embark after receiving a caution. http://www.chronicle.gi/headlines_details.php?id=35625
