Rebel above water and going to breakers

Barge being pumped out and lightered

On Jan 11 the "Rebel" at 1 p.m. was being dewatered by a Belgian salvage company at the quay in Neuves Maisons with the cargo of steel coils still being inside the cargo holds. The water level of the port was lowered by 40 centimeters for this purpose. The remainder of the cargo, which was around 240 tons, was lightered on Jan 11 and 12. The ship was thought to be scrapped afterwards. It had suffered a dent and a breach in the starboard side foreship and the bow thruster room had become flooded. It then foundered with a list to port as the wires still held it at the quay at starboard side.

Barge sank on the Moselle

In the night from Jan 4 to Jan 5, 2015, the "Rebel" sank on the Moselle after having loaded 900 tons of steel wire coils in Neuves-Maisons. The incident took place in the port of SAM, a which produces reinfored steel for concrete. Despite the intervention of firefighters and the lightering of 200 tons of steel the ship sank with only the wheelhouse and part of the deck showing above the water. The rescue forces, including divers, were able to surround the wreck with an oil boom to contain the risk of pollution. The barge has now stabilized so that the ship traffic on this stretch of the Moselle could be resumed.
