Work To Fix Angola’s Overturned Rig Still Ongoing

Wed Apr 30 07:08:47 CEST 2014 arnekiel

Smit Salvage, a unit of Netherlands-based dredging specialist Boskalis, on Monday said work to fix an overturned rig in the waters off Angola’s new liquefied natural gas plant would be finished early next year. Reuters reported that the three-legged Perro Negro 6 drilling rig keeled over last summer when it was being set to drill a channel for a gas pipeline critical to supporting the $10 billion factory.“Including the preparation phase (engineering and outfitting), mobilization and demobilization, the salvage operation is expected to take around 10 months,” a Boskalis spokesman told Reuters. “The work is expected to commence in this quarter.” When the rig overturned last summer, it killed one person and pushed back gas supplies from Chevron-run blocks, which were to be connected to the factory this year. Chevron holds a 36.4 percent stake in the factory. Angola’s state-owned oil company, Sonangol, has a 22.8 percent interest. Other shareholders are BP, Total and ENI. Source : Ventures

Smit Salvage to raise sunken rig

Wed Feb 05 10:24:00 CET 2014 Timsen

The Boskalis subsidiary Smit Salvage was contracted by the Italian company Saipem to raise the "Perro Negro 6" which sank on July 1, 2013. The rig is located in more than 30 meters deep water at the mouth of the Congo River off the coast of Angola. Smit is to remove the hull, legs and other parts of the platform using a special dive vessel, tugs and other specialized equipment. The job is due to start in the second quarter 2014.

Saipem Jack-Up Rig ‘Perro Negro 6′ Sinks Off Angola

Wed Jul 03 08:49:46 CEST 2013 arnekiel

Saipem informs that on July 1, the jack up drilling rig Perro Negro 6, due to the collapsing of the seabed under one of the three legs, suddenly tilted and suffered hull damages, causing water intake. The event occurred during the rig positioning on location prior to starting drilling operations, between the coasts of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the mouth of the Congo River, in approximately 40 metres of water. At 10.30 AM CEST, the rig, with no personnel on-board, capsized and sank. The emergency procedures were promptly activated to ensure the evacuation of the personnel on-board. After the sudden and significant tilting, among the 103 crew members, one was recorded missing and another six incurred minor injuries. At this moment, no environmental impacts have been reported, and all the prevention measures are being implemented. The Saipem emergency response team is mobilised and is working closely with the Angolan Authorities and the Client’s operational team.
