Pirates released Greek tanker Orfeas at around 10:30 UTC Oct 9 2012 after an ordeal which became ordinary for Gulf of Guinea hijacks; stealing part of cargo and ransacking vessel and crew. Master reported to the company that the 24 crew, including Greek master and chief engineer and 22 Filipino, is safe and in good health. Greek-managed tanker ORFEAS missing off west Africa, might be hijacked

A Greek ship management company says it has lost contact with one of its tankers off the coast of western Africa, where several vessels have been attacked by pirates. Grace Management S.A. says the Bahamas-flagged Orfeas was carrying 32,000 metric tons (35,000 tons) of gasoline to Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. The ship has a crew of two Greeks and 22 Filipinos. The managers said Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 they lost contact with the vessel on Saturday. The Orfeas had anchored off Abidjan, sailed south without orders or explanation and may be heading for Lagos, Nigeria.

Greek tanker Orfeas was hijacked around 0100 LT Oct 6 2012 off Abidjan, Ivory Coast, during STS operation. The Orfeas was to offload two shipments of gasoline on a lightering tanker Admiral L, one was successfully completed, but when Admiral L arrived to the Orfeas position for a second lot, Greek tanker disappeared, reported security consultants AKE. Vessel’s AIS signal was last spotted at around 1900 UTC Oct 6 in position 01 46N 000 36W, about 217 nm almost due south of Accra, Ghana. There are more than 30,000 tons of gasoline on board of Orfeas. Crew is 24, consisting of Greek and Filipino nationalities. AKE said that if tanker is hijacked, then, it’s the first hijack in Ivory Coast waters in recent years. Maritime Bulletin http://www.odin.tc
