Ship and crew said to be safe

Sat Nov 05 17:47:52 CET 2011 Timsen

The 20 crew members of the "Oceanic Union" which was reported earlier to have sunk off northern Philippine province of Ilocos, were reported to be safe by the Philippine Navy on Nov 5. Also the "Oceanic Union" did not sink but was under control and all water in its hold was pumped out. It was sailing with own power towards Subic and a tug was called to assist the vessel.

Ship abandoned - crew missing

Sat Nov 05 17:43:48 CET 2011 Timsen

Authorities are now scouring the waters off Ilocos Norte province after a foreign cargo vessel with 20 crew members sank late on Nov 4, 2011. The Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center reported that it received a distress call from the vessel which was passing through the waters of the province when it encountered mechanical trouble. The ship’s 20-man crew quickly took their life boats, indicating the vessel was already in a sinking condition, long before it radioed a distress call. The "Oceanic Union" was spotted about 170 nautical miles from Cape Bojedor. The whereabouts of the vessel's crew remained unknown. The PCG was coordinating an SAR operation with other maritime agencies to retrieve the shipwrecked crew as soon as possible. Residents near the coastal areas of Ilocos Norte were requested to report to the PCG if they saw the cargo vessel and any of its crewmembers.

Cargo ship with crew of 20 missing near Philippines, ship may have sunk

Sat Nov 05 09:37:08 CET 2011 arnekiel

The Philippine navy and coast guard are searching for 20 crew members of a cargo ship that may have sunk in rough waters west of the main island of Luzon. Coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Algier Ricafrente says the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center reported late Friday that it had received a distress call from the MV Oceanic Union off Ilocos Norte province. He says the ship may have sunk or was sinking since the crew had already abandoned ship. A navy vessel and a coast guard vessel, helicopter and airplane are scouring the waters about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Burgos township. Other ships passing through the area have been notified. The Panamanian-registered ship was heading to Subic Bay west of Manila from Shanghai.
