Fishing vessel distressed off Porthcurno

On March 5, 2021, the 'Ocean Pride-FH 24' started taking on water at a considerable rate nine nautical miles south of Porthcurno. The container ship ‘Mirror’ was standing by awaiting the arrival of a lifeboat. The crew of the reserve Penlee Lifeboat ‘Volunteer Spirit’ was paged at 4.13 p.m. by the Coastguard Operations Centre at Falmouth, and just eight minutes later the all-weather lifeboat was heading out through the gaps at Newlyn. The boat arrived about 25 minutes later. On arrival the situation was critical for the crew of the 'Ocean Pride' – she was taking in water through her stern tube at such a rate that the four or five onboard pumps could not keep up with the flooding. The lifeboat immediately went alongside, attached a tow rope, and one crew member managed to scramble on board with another salvage pump thaat was set up, allowing the 'Ocean Pride' to cut her engines. This slowed the ingress of water slightly and was just about keeping her afloat. The lifeboat was then joined by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924, which hovered above and winched down another salvage pump to the deck of the 'Ocean Pride', which helped to stem the flow of water. She was towed slowly back to Newlyn and on arrival reserve inshore lifeboat ‘Tabby Cat’ was waiting to act as a brake to bring the vessel safely into harbour.
