Blazing ferry evacuated off Masalembu
On Aug 1, 2024, at 5 p.m. WITA, ithe KM 'Niki Sejahtera', en route from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, caught fire approximately 42 miles north of Masalembu in pos. 05° 11.154' S / 113° 44.137' E. The ship was en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. It started in the vehicle deck and started spreading. The KM. 'Meratus Kapuas' came to assist and communicated with the Coastal Radio Station (SROP) Banjarmasin. The evacuation of the 152 passengers and the 44 crew members was started out with the assistance of the patrol boat 'Singa Laut 402' from the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla). The KM. 'Meratus Kapua' also coordinated with the SAR operation cente in Masalembu during the process.
