IJssel blocked by grounded barge
In the midday hours of June 24, 2014, the "Nelly V" ran aground on the IJssel near De Steeg. The ship was loaded with gravel. First the passing ship traffic was not affected, but after some unsuccessful attempts to get the vessel off, it blocked the fairway. Rijkswatersaat before had also attempted to get the ship moved by the swell of other ships passing with high speed. It was also tried in vain to pull the "Nelly V" off the shallow by another barge. Only at 9.30 p.m. the ship could be refloated after a part of the cargo was lightered aboard the dredger "Hemmes" which had moored alongside. The tug "Flumar" finally managed to pull the casualty into deeper water.
