Capsized Coast Guard boat salvaged
South Korea's Coast Guard on Oct 20 has begun salvage operations of its boat that capsized in waters off the southern island of Jeju during the salvage of the "Shinline 8"-crew. The Coast Guard boat capsized presumably due to high tides. The Coast Guard started to salvage the sunken boat with a crane and planned to inspect the wreckage to find the exact cause of the accident. An investigation was also under way into what caused the freighter to get into trouble. Report with photo: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2012/10/20/34/0302000000AEN20121020001800315F.HTML
Shinline 8 has sunk
The "Shinline 8" went down stern first on Oct 18 at 3.50 p.m. after it had called the Jeju Coast Guard at 7:15 a.m. and asked for help as it was being flooded 61 km west of Chagwi Island, Jeju. At the time, a high seas watch was in effect with waves over four meters high. The Jeju Coast Guard speeded to get the rescue ahead despite the bad weather. Normally they get 11 people on one boat, but the distressed sailors scrambled aboard so the one that capsized was carrying 17 people. Five seafarers killed after Coast Guard vessel that rescued them capsized
The Yonhap News Agency said the Coast Guard boat capsized in waters about 27.7 kilometers off the west coast of Jeju Island in the Korean Strait at 12:26 p.m. It said the Coast Guard vessel was transferring 11 sailors from a troubled Malaysian freighter to a rescue ship when "high waves" flipped it over. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Standard cited an Agence France Presse report that said the Coast Guard vessel was carrying 15 crewmembers from the Singapore-bound Shinline freighter when it capsized due to big waves. A second Coast Guard vessel managed to rescue the other 10 crewmembers and the Coast Guard officers from the capsized South Koren vessel. The Shinline freighter had a crew of 13 Chinese citizens and six Filipinos. The crew had radioed for help after their ship started taking on water. http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/278847/pinoyabroad/news/three-pinoy-two-chinese-seamen-killed-in-sea-mishap-off-korea
