Ferry ran aground after being disabled by a rope
The 'Langkawi Ferry 1' with a total of 140 passengers and crew members on board was disabled on May 15, 2023, at around 8 p.m. LT, en route from Langkawi to Kuala, after a drifting rope got twisted around the propeller. As a consequence, the ferry ran aground about 2,5 nautical miles southwest of Kuala Perlis, 900 meters away from its berth. MMEA assets were deployed to the scene of the incident to monitor the work carried out by the ferry company. A tug refloated the ferry, and all passengers arrived safely at the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal on May 16 at 12.20 a.m.
Engine failure off Kuala Perlis
The 'Langkawi Ferry 1', 222 gt, while en route from Langkawi with 200 people on board, suffered an engine failure and was disabled for three hours in the waters off Kuala Perlis on Sep 6, 2020, at 7 a.m. The vessel aborted its voyage but was able to safely return to the Kuala Perlis port.
