Container ship lost containers in storm

Wed Dec 25 03:17:04 CET 2013 Timsen

In the evening of Dec 23, 2013, at 8:30 p.m. the CROSS Etel was alerted by the "Cosco Nagoya" after the loss of 79 containers. The container ship which was enroute from Rotterdam via Le Havre where it had sailed on Dec 22, to New York was at 200 nautical miles off Penmarc'h. 50 more containers unstable or had toppled. The ship had no problem regarding ist worthiness and no structural problems due to the stormy weather conditions encountered in the Atlantic. The vessel turned around to Le Havre where it was expected on Dec 25 at 8 a.m., getting ahead with 15 knots. A customs aircraft was dispatched to the area in the late morning to monitor the scene. The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy indicated the potential presence of containers floating on the water. The maritime prefecture of the English Channel and the North Sea was closely following the progress and condition of the cargo of the "Cosco Nagoya" jointly with the CROSS Joburg. The emergency tug "Abeille Liberté" which was anchored near the northwest tip of Cotentin was to be sent to meet the container ship in the traffic separation scheme of the Caskets in northwest Cotentin. To counter the possibility of a further drop of Containers in the dense traffic of the Channel, the "Abeille Liberté" was to escort the vessel to Le Havre where specialized team was to board the vessel in the waiting area to assess the situation of cargo and prepare the ship to dock.
